Green, if only by accident

Opportunistic attempts to gain kudos for green business activities are plentiful these days. In reality, many programmes designed to save money were only accidentally friendly to the planet.

Full marks to Capita Life and Pensions infrastructure manager Shaymus Kennedy then, for showing a sense of humour when addressing a VMware conference in London this week.

Kennedy outlined how running virtualisation software had offered Capita an environmental advantage when his firm set up eight ESX servers to run over 80 virtual machines rather than relying on a far greater proliferation of servers.

"We lowered our carbon footprint," Kennedy said, pausing, "before we even knew what a carbon footprint was."
